If you have been through a divorce, or are currently going through one, you have likely heard of alimony. Alimony, or spousal support, occurs when one spouse is ordered by the court to pay the other money either during or after the divorce. Spousal support can be put in place to help one individual maintain their marital standard of living, while they work on getting a degree, or other means to be able to support themselves.

Alimony Pendente Lite

Alimony Pendente Lite is a type of temporary spousal support that only occurs before a couple gets their judgment of dissolution. It allows the recipient to continue to live the lifestyle that they are accustomed to while the divorce is ongoing. Whether or not the recipient continues to receive alimony after the trial depends upon the decision of the court.

Permanent Alimony

Permanent Alimony or spousal support is a bit of a misnomer, as it does not mean it will go on forever. This is when one spouse is required to pay alimony to another for a set period of time or until the parties agree otherwise, death of a party, or further court order.

Alimony in Gross

Alimony in Gross occurs when the couple agrees to pay the other an agreed-upon set dollar amount. This alimony can be paid in a one-time lump sum or with installment payments.
